If you are an M.D. or D.O. from an accredited school and are board certified or eligible to sit for the boards and limit your practice to General Surgery, you are eligible to join the Florida Society of General Surgeons. What We've Done...

Review and Action of Regulatory Issues
- FSGS constantly reviews all issues with the potential to affect general surgery. We have members who actively represent us in Tallahassee; those who travel to Washington to lobby for us, and those who have assumed leadership positions and represent our interests in the Florida Medical Association.
- FSGS members were instrumental in halting the sudden and radical changes proposed by HCFA to the RBRVS System, which would have significantly decreased reimbursement for surgical procedures.
- We fought for the right to have a First Surgical Assistant be a qualified medical doctor or an assistant approved by the surgeon rather than an HMO.
- FSGS played a leadership role in promoting legislation to force disability insurance carriers to maintain payments to physicians and other health-care providers who become infected with AIDS and Hepatitis.
- FSGS members successfully supported the development of a state funded trauma network which became a national model.
The Florida Society of General Surgeons is the only state organization composed entirely of General Surgeons.

The Florida Society of General Surgeons supports resident physician activities and offers a forum for presentation of resident papers at its Annual Meeting.
A Voice for Surgical Issues
The federal and state governments continue to review health care regulations...and so does the FSGS. Recently we became the State Chapter of the American Society of General Surgeons, the only national organization that works on behalf of General Surgeons exclusively. The ASGS is a pro-active "player" monitoring issues and lobbying in Washington on issues that affect us in our daily practices. Together with ASGS, we try to find solutions to the very serious problems affecting our practices.
Essentially, we are an organization that enables membership to seek solutions to our problems and makes it easier for all of us to control our professional destiny as we pass through this difficult time.
The Florida Society of General Surgeons provides an opportunity for board-certified General Surgeons to exchange thoughts and opinions. The Society is the professional voice of the General Surgeon in all developments of health care and standards.
In today's complex Surgical climate we find oursleves using tremendous technological advances yet suffering significant decreases in payment from federally-funded and third party payers.
